7 Reasons Your AC Is Running But Not Cooling
1. Dirty Air Filter (DIY Fix)
A clogged filter restricts airflow and prevents proper cooling. Check your filter first - if it looks grey and dirty, replace it. This is the most common cause and costs $10-$20 to fix.
2. Refrigerant Leak (Call a Pro)
Low refrigerant due to a leak causes warm air. Signs: AC runs constantly, ice forming on the unit, or hissing sounds. Requires a licensed technician to diagnose and repair.
3. Dirty Condenser Coils (DIY or Pro)
The outdoor unit needs clear airflow. Check that it is not blocked by debris, plants, or dirt buildup. You can gently clean the fins with a hose. Annual maintenance prevents this.
4. Frozen Evaporator Coil (Call a Pro)
If airflow is restricted (usually by a dirty filter) the evaporator coil freezes. Turn the AC off to let it thaw, replace the filter, then restart. If it freezes again, call for service.
5. Failing Compressor (Call a Pro)
The compressor is the heart of your AC. If it is failing, the system cannot cool effectively. This is a significant repair - sometimes replacement is more cost-effective than a compressor repair.
6. Thermostat Issues (DIY Check)
Check your thermostat settings - make sure it is set to COOL not FAN, and the set temperature is below current room temperature. Also check batteries if it is a battery-powered thermostat.
7. Undersized System (Consultation Needed)
If your AC is constantly running but never quite cools your home on hot NJ days, it may be undersized for your home. This requires a professional assessment and possibly a system replacement.
If you have replaced the filter, cleaned the outdoor unit, and checked the thermostat - and your AC is still not cooling - call us. A diagnostic fee applies to repair calls. We tell you the fee upfront before coming out.
