The Repair vs. Replace Framework
✓ Repair Makes Sense When:
- ✓System is under 10 years old
- ✓Repair cost is under 50% of replacement cost
- ✓This is the first repair (not repeated issues)
- ✓The failure is a minor, inexpensive component
✕ Replace Makes Sense When:
- ✕System is over 12-15 years old (AC) or 15-20 (furnace)
- ✕Repair cost exceeds 50% of a new system
- ✕You have had multiple repairs in the last 2 years
- ✕The compressor or heat exchanger has failed (major components)
- ✕R-22 refrigerant system (discontinued - replacement parts scarce)
The Rule of $5,000
Multiply your system age by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, lean toward replacement. Example: 10-year-old system x $400 repair = $4,000 (repair). 14-year-old system x $600 repair = $8,400 (replace).
We give you honest repair vs. replace advice - not a sales pitch. If your system just needs a repair, we tell you. We would rather earn your trust with an honest recommendation than make a quick sale on a replacement you don't need.
